As Arizona state officials open their own probe into Operation Fast and Furious, the head of the House panel investigating the gunrunning scandal is crying foul over a key player’s move Tuesday to assert his Fifth Amendment right to refuse to answer questions.

Yesterday, the state House Public Safety Subcommittee passed HF 573 by a 2 to 1 vote.  This important “stand your ground” self-defense legislation will now be heard by the full House Public Safety Committee as early as tomorrow.  State Representatives Clel Baulder (R-58) and Matt Windschitl (R-56) voted to pass HF 573, while Representative Rick Olson (D-68) voted against it.  Also, Senate Joint Resolution 2001 passed in the state Senate Natural Resources and Environment Committee by a 9 to 3 vote.  In the meantime, House Joint Resolution 2001, House companion of SJR 2001, is expected to be voted on tomorrow in the state House Natural Resources Committee.

Tomorrow, the state House Judiciary Committee will hear an NRA-supported bill: House Bill 2471 would reform the background check requirements for firearm purchases by CPL holders. HB 2471 will be heard tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. in Hearing Room A of the John L. O’Brien Building in Olympia.

Tomorrow, January 25, the state Senate Courts of Justice Committee will hear a number of pro- and anti-gun bills that could have a major effect on the Second Amendment rights of all Virginians. One pro-gun bill of great importance to gun owners is Senate Bill 323. Sponsored by state Senator Bill Carrico (R-40), this legislation would repeal the prohibition on law-abiding citizens buying more than one handgun within a thirty-day period. Anti-gun opponents have long claimed that gun rationing keeps handguns out of the hands of criminals, but history has shown this law has been ineffective and only affects and penalizes law-abiding citizens.

Today, the state House Judiciary Committee was scheduled to vote on two very important firearm bills. Unfortunately, the votes on House Bill 1523 and House Bill 1668 have been delayed until next month. Tomorrow, January 25, the state Senate Natural Resources and the Environment Committee is scheduled to hear NRA-backed Senate Bill 301. This hearing will take place at 3:00 p.m. in Room 450 of the State Capitol.

Tomorrow, January 25, the Judiciary Committee will hear testimony on Legislative Bill 804, which will strengthen your ability to protect yourself and your family by adding personal vehicles to areas in which the Castle Doctrine would apply and removing the fear of criminal prosecution when using deadly force if attacked. This hearing is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. in Room 1113 of the Nebraska Capitol.

The 2012 session of the West Virginia Legislature is underway and has gotten off to a great start for gun owners. Pro-gun West Virginia legislators have introduced four NRA-backed bills already with at least one more bill expected to be introduced in the very near future.
