The contentious long gun registry is getting closer to its date with the firing squad.Candice Hoeppner, parliamentary secretary to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, said in a statement that the government is “one step closer to eliminating the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry once and for all.”

A proposed constitutional amendment that would make it harder for officials to limit who can buy and carry a gun is expected to come before Iowa lawmakers soon, and a key legislator said he’s optimistic about its chances.

The names and addresses of concealed weapons permit holders would no longer be public information under a bill due for a vote in the House of Delegates Wednesday.The bill from Del. Mark Cole, R Spotsylvania, says that court clerks shall withhold the name and any other information on a concealed carry permit application.

Illinois residents with firearm owner identification cards would have more leeway in renewing them if the General Assembly passes legislation proposed by Rep. Adam Brown, R Decatur.

Last Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder appeared before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to answer questions about his role in the deadly “Fast and Furious” gun-running scandal. However, instead of answers, Congress got more defiance, more arrogance, and more wasted time with an attorney general who clearly feels no sense of obligation to the American people or our rule of law.

House Bill 4054 is scheduled to be heard in the state House Health Care Committee on Monday, February 13.  This hearing will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Hearing Room E of the Oregon Capitol.  Sponsored by state Representative Jim Thompson (R-23), HB 4054 would prohibit the Public Employees’ Benefit Board from authorizing or requiring the collection of information or maintenance of records about firearms from eligible employees or family members applying for health benefits.

NRA-backed legislation House Bill 1048 and House Bill 1064 will be heard in the state House Judiciary Committee this Thursday, February 9, at 1:30 p.m. in Room 107 of the State Capitol.
